Tripp Cabin Suitcase Holiday 6 – Luggage Review

Last updated: 28 June 2023

If you’re looking for cabin luggage for your next holiday, then consider the Holiday 6 4 wheel cabin suitcase by Tripp

With a hard clamshell design, four wheels, and a telescopic handle, the Holiday 6 is ideal for a short break. It’s budget airline compliant, plus the price point makes this cabin bag great value for money.

If you are British, it is highly likely you have seen and heard of Tripp luggage during your travels, easily identifiable by the cubed design on the front of the case. Alongside their carry-on range, Tripp has a range of suitcases in all shapes and sizes from cabin size, to a medium, all the way up to a large model.

What to Expect in This Post

Why Am I Reviewing the Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase?

We got our hands on the latest model of Tripp’s cabin suitcase range, the Holiday 6. After owning a number of Tripp cases over the last few years, I thought it was about time I did a review.

The Size

The Holiday 6 has dimensions of 55cm x 40 x 20 making it carry-on compliant with the current strict dimensions imposed by many European budget airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet and Wizz Air. It’s also compliant with full-service airlines like British Airways.

Of course these requirements can change so we recommend you double check with your airline prior to departing for the airport as bag sizes and weight restrictions can vary from one carrier to the next.

The Exterior

The Tripp Holiday 6 is a hard clamshell design made of 100% polypropylene built around an aluminium frame. These elements contribute to the case’s light weight, coming in at just 2.7kg.

The plastic, rather than fabric, exterior means it is splash resistant should you be caught in an unexpected rainstorm or need to wheel your bag through a puddle. It’s worth noting that water can penetrate through the reinforced single zip so the case is not entirely waterproof.

The hard shell has decorative blocks on the front, frequently seen in this range and one that certainly contributes to brand recognition. As is the case with most hard shell cases, there is no accessible front pocket which you can use to easily retrieve small items.

Unlike previous models, the Holiday 6 model does not have a discreet built in name plate where you can put your contact information should you be separated from your bag. We’d recommend getting a separate luggage tag or a bespoke bag belt so you know which bag is yours.

Wheels

With four wheels are all swivel caster style meaning the case can spin full circle and manoeuvres effortlessly on busy streets, tube platforms and pavements. It’s so smooth that you will need to keep hold of it on the Tube/train as it will roll around with the movement of the train. The hard plastic wheels are a little louder than hoped for when pulling along on footpaths, but with hard plastic wheels comes durability. In previous models of this same case, we had no issue with the wheels aside from a bit of a squeaky wheel after 3 years of regular use.  Some lubricant (WD40 for example) to the wheel and the problem was fixed!

Handles

The retractable telescopic handle to drag the bag has two heights at which you can set it.  At 6ft/183cm tall, I prefer to set the telescopic handle at mid height while Russ prefers his fully extended. Whichever your preference, there is an option to suit you.

To carry the bag up and down stairs, in and out of the overhead bins etc, there is a grab handle on the top of the case.

Using the retractable telescopic handle to carry the bag is the quickest way to break it, so ensure you use only the grab handle provided to lift the case. Unfortunately on the cabin bag of the Holiday 6 range, there is no handle on the long side of the case. I would use this handle should I need to store the case sideways, on an overhead luggage rack on a train carriage for example. There is a side handle on the larger models of this range.

TSA Lock

For the security conscious, the Tripp range comes with a handy security feature, by way of a TSA Lock. The Travel Sentry approved lock allows your luggage to be opened, inspected, and relocked by security authorities without damaging your case.

The three-digit combination works by securing the zippers into place. The Tripp range comes with a handy guide to creating your bespoke code, ensuring peace of mind from any unauthorised access when your bag is out of sight.

Colours

The Holiday 6 cabin bag range comes in some very fun, bright and candylike colours which I think makes it easy to help easily identify your bag in a sea of black suitcases.

The range comes in six colours:

  • Banana (yellow)
  • Ice blue
  • Turquoise
  • Slate (grey)
  • Black
  • Watermelon (red)

Aside from Slate and Black, the other colours may be a bit too flamboyant for many corporate business travellers with conservative dress codes. In my opinion, for leisure travellers the lively palette screams fun vacation vibes.

The Interior

The clamshell design means the zip runs through the middle of the suitcase, enabling you to pack both sides of the case. This hinged design has pluses and minuses:

Positives:

  • The shallow compartments make it easier to find items
  • It’s easier to pack

Negatives:

  • You need to fully open the case to retrieve an item, which is especially difficult when space is limited, like on board a plane/train
  • When staying in a hotel and wish to use the luggage rack, most are not designed to hold a clamshell case, but rather a traditional style where one flip up the lid against the wall
  • No external pocket for quick and easy access to retrieve small items

Whether or not you like the clamshell design is entirely a personal decision and not reflective of Tripp or other manufacturers.

Compartments

The two polyester lined sections come with different features, making it easy to secure items in place by either elasticated packing straps or a mesh divider secured by a zip.

On one compartment is a stretchy mesh divider which I like to use for my clothes and packing cubes.  The mesh does have some give to it should you need to pack bulky items for a winter break.

The other side uses elasticated packing straps to secure items.  This side I use for bigger items, such as a toiletries bag, a tripod and shoes. There are some ridges on this side, from the frame for the telescopic handle. Make use of the ridges to separate and secure your items and keep everything in place.

Verdict

The Holiday 6 is the latest addition to the Tripp Cabin suitcase range.  It’s big enough for a weekend break, capable of accommodating enough clothing and other essential items for a short break.

I love the price point of Tripp suitcases. They provide the necessities in luggage; strong, ultra-lightweight bags for a great price.

As an added bonus, Tripp stands by their products with a 5-year guarantee.

Need a Larger Case?

This review is for the Tripp Holiday 6 four wheel cabin size suitcase.  Should you need something bigger, the range also has a medium (66L capacity) and large (102L capacity) cases.
