Seaside Serenity in Sri Lanka: A Stay at Parangi Weligama Bay

Located in the picturesque coastal town of Weligama, Parangi Weligama Bay stands as a testament to modern luxury blended with historical charm. Drawing inspiration from the spice traders of old, this boutique hotel offers a laid-back tropical escape for leisure travellers seeking relaxation and adventure.

The hotel’s design reflects its maritime influences, with dark timber accents juxtaposed against vibrant beachy colours, creating a welcoming ambiance throughout.

Upon arrival, we’re welcomed warmly into the property by a team of Parangi staff. Armed with big smiles, handmade floral leis of verdant leaves and pink frangipanis, and revitalising freshly-squeezed watermelon juice. The latter was so refreshing I went back for a second after discovering it’s just what’s required after battling the stifling tropical humidity that dominated the island throughout our visit.

Guests can choose from a selection of spacious and airy rooms, each adorned with artefacts celebrating the rich history and culture of the region along with thoughtful touches like local Dankotuwa Porcelain crockery and Ayurvie Herbals toiletries in rooms along with an array of toiletries often overlooked and missed in many hotels these days such as shower caps, toothbrushes, razors, sewing kits, a comb, and a vanity set of cotton wool pads, cotton swabs, and an emery board.

Al fresco dining at Parangi Weligama Bay

Guests looking to remain onsite can utilise the inhouse dining options at Parangi Weligama Bay. One opportunity not to miss is the alfresco dining options overlooking the beach.

We met with sous chef, Mr Chandana, for a cooking demonstration at the outdoor kitchen during our stay, where he showcased the restaurant’s ability to serve a delectable fusion of Sri Lankan, Asian, and international cuisine, highlighting fresh seafood and local ingredients. Guests can savour dishes like green bean tempered, yellowfin tuna with abul thiyal, daal curry, red rice, and coconut sambal while enjoying the ocean breeze.

It was evident from our stay that alfresco dining takes centre stage, with tables strategically placed closer to the beach, offering a charming seaside ambiance. Crafted from reclaimed items like vintage treadle sewing machines and old boats, beachside tables exude rustic charm.

Guests can enjoy their meals under the shade of cabanas or opt for tables in the sunshine. The restaurant welcomes diners throughout the day, serving lunch and dinner until approximately 10 pm. Breakfast is served at tables beside the pool with a varied menu including options of traditional Sri Lankan, and Western consisting of eggs, toast, and freshly cut fruit.
