Hotel Indigo Coventry Review

Coventry isn’t always the first place that springs to mind for a weekend away – a fact we were reminded of more than once, met with raised eyebrows and a puzzled “why?” from friends when we mentioned the trip. But Hotel Indigo Coventry gave us a genuinely good reason to go, and after a weekend here, we’re ready to tell you exactly what to expect if you’re considering it too.

The Hotel

Opened in January 2024, this 4-star boutique hotel sits right in the heart of the city, opposite Coventry’s new Council headquarters as part of the wider Friargate business district. With 101 guest rooms, an onsite restaurant and bar, and a guest lounge, it’s designed to bring some genuine street-level energy back to this part of the city.

I love hotels that embrace local heritage, and Hotel Indigo Coventry is no different. It captures the essence of this dynamic city, blending modern comforts with a nod to its rich heritage. The interiors draw on Coventry’s local heritage, the city’s history of car manufacturing and cycling innovation shows up throughout, alongside a playful nod to the “Elephant in the Room,” a historic symbol for Coventry featured in the Coventry City Coat of Arms, and the Coventry FC crest.

The decor connects guests to the local area including a Penny Farthing on loan from Coventry Transport Museum, and an Austin-Healey from 1958 in the hotel reception.

Local artist, Katie O, was commissioned to develop art as a celebration of Coventry’s 2-Tone music scene and history.
It’s the kind of detail that turns a hotel stay into a little history lesson.

Location

Staying here means you’re a stone’s throw from the city centre. Situated less than two minutes walk from Coventry train station, with landmarks such as Coventry Cathedral, Coventry Transport Museum, the Herbert Art Gallery, are all walkable from the hotel. 

For sporting fans, Hotel Indigo Coventry is walking distance to the Skydome Arena, home to Coventry Blaze, the city’s elite Ice Hockey team. Coventry Building Society Arena, a 32,609-seater stadium, home to Premier League club Coventry City, is an 11-minute drive, or 7-min train trip from the nearby Coventry train station making it a convenient hotel if match day is on the agenda.

The Rooms

Spread over four floors, Hotel Indigo Coventry has 101 uniquely styled, air-conditioned rooms.

There are 4 tiers of rooms, plus an accessible option.

• Standard room – King or twin bed configuration, ensuite shower room with a small seating area. 23 sqm
• Premium room – King bed, ensuite shower room, arm chair with overhead lamp, and a stocked minibar. 25 sqm
• Premium accessible room – same as a premium room but with a wet room 
• Super king suite – King bed, 55-inch tv, living room, and ensuite with a roll-top bath, and a walk-in shower. 45sqm
• Bedroom suite – Super-king size bed, 55-inch tv, stocked minibar, additional living area and ensuite with roll top bath and a walk-in shower. 56sqm

Expect luxury Hypnos beds and Egyptian cotton linens – the same combination I’ve come to associate with Hotel Indigo properties, and it’s every bit as comfortable here.

We stayed on the 4th floor. It was subtly decorated with a nod to Coventry’s historic cycling industry. Such as prints in-room, and even a bicycle bottle opener as a gift. 

Other floors are themed Motor City, and Reimaging & Reneration. 

In your room you can expect a smart TV, an in-room safe, and free WiFi. Tea and coffee making facilities are included as standard. 

Premium rooms include a stocked minibar with complimentary drinks including San Pellegrino cans, and Marlish Farm still and sparkling water which is manufactured in the UK, minimising their carbon footprint while also being BPA and plastic free, and 100% recyclable. Artisan snacks such as Melcalfe’s sweet & salt popcorn, and Meredith and Drew biscuits which is a nice touch. I can attest to the robustness of the Nespresso machine which comes with four pods. It was comprehensively tested by yours truly.

Ensuite is ocean-colour toned, with rainfall showers that make getting ready for a day of exploring Coventry feel like less of a chore. Large size bottles reduce plastic, with toiletries such as shower caps, toothbrushes, and razors available from reception upon request. 

Bathroom products are Muddy & Wild branded. A sustainable-focussed company who actively supports rewilding initiatives across the UK. Products contain no sulfates, parabens, or silicones. They’re also vegan & cruelty-free.

At the time of our visit, a speedtest yielded speeds of:

Dining

Cogs Bar and Kitchen is the hotel’s onsite restaurant, serving up continental cuisine and drink throughout the day.

Located on the ground floor, the dining area seats 76 diners, with additional capacity in the lounge on soft seating, which features another nod to the local area with a large wall-mounted penny-farthing on loan from Coventry’s Transport Museum. As with most hotels these days, you do not need to be a hotel guest to access the restaurant.

Breakfast

Hotel guests can elect to have their breakfast served in-room*, or book a time to dine in the restaurant. 

The continental spread covers the usual suspects – sliced meats (ham, salami) and cheese (brie, emmental), a full run of cereals (Special K, muesli, granola, cornflakes, Weetabix, Coco Pops), Greek-style yoghurt, and sliced seasonal fruit (watermelon, pineapple), and berries. A nice touch: breakfast smoothies served in shot glasses, in mango & banana and strawberry. 

Choices are plentiful, including a proper full English with locally sourced sausages, bacon, fried eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, and beans, all self-served from enamelled cast iron pots at the buffet. For something more considered, an à la carte menu offers:

• Porridge bowl with Honeyfields bee honey, apricots, cranberries, walnuts, and cinnamon sugar
• Smashed avocado and poached eggs on sourdough
• Eggs Royale
• Buttermilk pancakes with crispy bacon, maple syrup, and blueberries

Hot drinks can be brought to the table, or self-serve using the machines in the restaurant. 

Dinner

Dinner at Cogs is a casual affair. Their headline burger is ‘The Knockout Burger’. It was designed by, and named in honour of local boxer star Bradley Goldsmith who was born and raised in Coventry. Goldsmith, at the time of writing, 16-1 with 10KO’s as a professional boxer.  

The chicken version, ‘Peeping Tom’, nods to the local legend of Lady Godiva – the noblewoman who rode naked through Coventry to shame her husband, Earl Leofric, into lowering the town’s harsh taxes, with Tom being the man who peeked as she rode by. 

The menu describes the Peeping Tom burger as featuring grilled chicken thighs, streaky bacon, guacamole, tomato, and gem lettuce. Served with fries. It looked appealing and was well presented however I found it lacked depth or complexity to really satisfy. 

I’ll be candid: the steaks were cooked inconsistently, cutlery went missing, and more than a few menu items weren’t available on the night. Service was faultless throughout, but the food itself doesn’t yet hit the mark for a hotel of this caliber. A new head chef came on board as of summer 2026, and I’m hopeful the kitchen catches up to the rest of the property soon.

*Room service is available, with a menu including nibbles, sandwiches and hot melts, burgers, pizza, and desserts. A tray charge of £5 applies to all orders. 

Private Dining

For special occasions or larger groups, the Lady Godiva room provides a unique and unforgettable dining experience, a private dining space for up to 12 people.

Dog friendly 

Bringing your best friend along for the ride?

For a fixed charge of £25 per dog per night, the hotel provides a dog blanket, water bowl, and treats – because every good boy (or girl) deserves a paw-per stay too. Just be sure to let the hotel know in advance of your arrival.

Gym 

For anyone keen to keep up a routine while away, the hotel has a dedicated guest gym on the first floor.

It’s well-equipped for a hotel of this size – treadmills, a bike, and an elliptical cover the cardio side, while free weights, kettlebells, a BOSU ball, gym ball, and yoga mat give you plenty to work with if you’re after something more functional or mat-based.

Dry cleaning & Laundry 

A quick laundry and dry cleaning service is available to guests, though oddly, pricing is listed in Euros rather than GBP.

Getting to/from Hotel Indigo Coventry

Arriving by Car/Parking

Guests arriving by car should note that there is no on-site car park. Parking is available at Coventry Train Station Multi-Storey Car Park. The hotel can validate car parking at Check in for a
charge of £8 or the Guest can pay themselves prior to leaving the car park at the pay machine located on the ground floor. 

Arriving by Train

The nearest train station is Coventry. A two-minute walk from the station to the hotel. Take the pedestrianised path for the most direct route. 

Direct trains to Coventry from London are available on Avanti West Coast, West Midlands Railway (WMR) or London Northwestern Railway (LNR). Fast trains can do the trip in under an hour, cheaper slower trains can take up to two hours. 

Be mindful when buying your train ticket to ensure you’re taking the right train company. Tickets are not universal, they’re provider specific. 

Not coming from London? 

Trains to Coventry from Manchester Piccadilly (2 hours). CrossCountry runs a direct service, otherwise you’ll need to change trains at Birmingham.

Trains to Coventry from Birmingham (30 mins, no changes)

The Essentials

Hotel Indigo Coventry

Hotel Indigo Coventry gets a lot right. The design is genuinely thoughtful, the rooms are comfortable and well-equipped, and the location couldn’t be more convenient for a car-free visit.

One standout: the rooms are remarkably quiet, with the double glazing doing an excellent job of shutting out city noise for a genuinely restful night’s sleep. The dining experience didn’t quite match the rest of the stay, though with a new head chef just arrived so I expect Cogs to find its feet soon. I’d happily stay here again, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the kitchen evolves.
