The Month That Was June 2017

Last updated: 29 July 2023

From the Roaming Required Archives. Here’s a flashback from the month that was June 2017.

If you’re new to our monthly wrap posts, you should probably go back and read May as we spent half of June continuing that trip.

June started with us still in the Southern Hemisphere, about halfway through our stint in Australia. Russ was firmly planted in Sydney while I ran up and down the eastern seaboard seeing family and friends scattered across the coastline.

Reflecting back on what I wrote in May, I actually covered so much of June at the same time. I’m not going to repeat myself over and over so let’s just fast forward to mid June.

We landed back in London and schlepped our way across the city.  Heathrow is not our closest airport but at least the Tube goes there! In hindsight we could have taken the Heathrow Express which saves a stack of time! Anyway! We hit the ground running, going straight back to our jobs the day after we landed.  Suitcases strewn across the floor of our tiny London shoebox sized apartment made for some challenging limbo/circus style manoeuvres as we stepped over them every day.

Arriving home isn’t always the pleasure-fest you think it’ll be.  For us, we discovered a leak that had been ongoing since we left. Eeek! Our apartment had a noticeable amount of water coming from a consistent drip. Drat.  Rather than spending our last day of vacation snoozing in the hammock, it was spent pulling carpet up and drying out much of our items that were nearby.  We said thank you for your service to some beloved, albeit sentimental items we’d accrued over the years.

Our giant world map that hung over in prime position our couch, and provided hours of inspiration and creative opportunities was waterlogged beyond repair.  It alongside many other things, were tossed unceremoniously into the bin.   – I don’t think there’s a lesson to be had here, it’s just incredibly unlucky.

Halfway through June was World Tapas Day. You might have figured out by now I can’t say no to some good food so off I headed off to the restaurant Carousel to join some blogger friends for an Iberian feast!

One more thing I can’t say no to is GIN.  I was never ever a gin drinker until about a year ago.  Gin was for old ladies I would say. Well, say no more. Gin is IN!  We joined One Gin for their launch at Roof East, a rooftop in Stratford, just near the Olympic Village. You couldn’t have asked for a better atmosphere with a reserved VIP area, good gin and GAMES!

There was some very competitive putt putt golf, lawn bowls and the most competitive, giant Jenga. We both feature in the The Spirit of One Launch video.

We also popped into the launch of the Merchant House near Blackfriars.  Tucked in behind a lane way is this little goldmine.  A small establishment where the staff actually know their stuff and care about their customers.  Gin and Whiskey are their specialities and we couldn’t get enough of the place.

We finished off June with a weekend in the country.  We spent the weekend in Sherwood Forest, reacquainting ourselves with nature.  We found ourselves in a luxury self-catering style cabin in the forest.  Determined to make the most of the downtime, we grabbed everything we’d need for 2 days of hot tub, outdoor dining, napping all on repeat.

June in London meant some big name events.  Trooping the Colour, the Queen’s annual birthday extravaganza and the multi-day foodie haven that is Taste of London.  We have been to both in the past and recommend you add it to your list for 2018!

After our mammoth trip to Australia via Thailand and the UAE, it’s no surprise that this image of the Golden Mount in Bangkok is this month’s most popular Instagram.

What’s Coming Up in July?

The big hitter for July in London is Wimbledon.  (See what I did there?)  Large screens are erected all over the city as office workers sneak out for extended lunch breaks to watch the tournament.

Most of this is covered in our What’s on in London in July, with a whole list of things to do including tours of  Buckingham Palace which only happen in the Summer.  Something that’s not listed is the annual Oyster Festival in the quaint village of Whitstable in Kent.  I hear it is worth the effort so fingers crossed we make it this year!

For us?

Believe it or not, it looks to be a relatively quiet month! We could certainly do with the rest that’s for sure! We’ve got a 4th of July BBQ, a blogging event or two that’s sure to entail eating and drinking FAR too much. As dull as it sounds, that’s it but I’m sure it’ll change as the month progresses!

What did you get up to in June?
