Teeing up – Golf in Greenwich

Last updated: 15 July 2023

Originally published Oct 2015. Last week I was invited to join a bunch of bloggers to N1 Golf in North Greenwich for Monarch.

It’s been five long years since I picked up a golf club.  My brothers and I would often go out for a round or two.  Well, they mostly played and being the baby sister, I was often tasked with being the caddy or putting the ball onto the tee.   I suppose over the years I learnt a thing or two!

Wonder what a bunch of blogging golfers look like?

However, I’ve never been to a driving range like this before.  Back in Australia, my local driving range was someone’s back paddock and the range manager would walk out wearing a combat gear & a helmet to collect the stray golf balls.  Yes we used to use the poor guy as a target sometimes! Suffice to say, N1Golf at North Greenwich was nothing like this.

Teeing off under the lights of Canary Wharf

Under the sparkling setting of North Greenwich, we had One Direction playing in the background and the city glimmering at dusk.  Light bouncing off the water and the high-rise buildings as the sun set over Canary Wharf.  Once again, I got the warm and fuzzy feelings of how much I love this damn place.

After mingling with industry and new bloggers, a few lessons were provided with golf pro Mark. He patiently educated some of us on how to hold and hit, while others got a technique refining lesson.  Liquid encouragement in the form of wine and beer from Vinothec Compass helped some of us step up to the tee.

We got to hit a few golf balls having a good giggle in the process.  Aiming for the ball-collecting buggy was just proof a moving target isn’t always the easiest thing to hit!  It felt amazing.  I didn’t realise how much I missed playing golf.  I think much fun was had by all!

Golfing holidays is just one more branch in the Monarch tree of offerings.  To help encourage us a little more, Monarch offered 2 return flights to select destinations for the longest drive.  To level the playing field, we measured how far we could drive via some whiz-bang software. Despite a solid attempt, I didn’t win.

That’s me! That’s my ball! Look at it go!                                                                                  Image by: @LaurieWang_

I hit a staggering 134 yards!

One thing worth noting, golfing will wear you out.  After the chilly night air got a grip on me, we were escorted down into Vinothec Compass for a wine tasting and some very yummy food.

Pork, beef, and a delicious cheese platter accompanied a tasting of 3 beers, and 4 wines.  Dessert in the form of a delicious morsel of chocolate brownie that had me reaching for seconds!

It must be mentioned, thank you to Vinothec Compass for the beer and wine tastings as well as the amazing food.  Credit to N1Golf for the golf lessons & to Monarch for organising the event.

  1. What a great way to get together with fellow bloggers! That has to be the driving range with the best view I\’ve ever seen!
